The Wisconsin unclaimed property program was transferred from the state treasurer's office to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR). This was done to increase efficiency. DOR will be able to actually get unclaimed property back to Wisconsin residents much better than ever before. Starting this year in July, DOR will begin to automatically match unclaimed property holders to Wisconsin residents to return their property. The state treasurer used to be the custodian of the unclaimed property program. Now state law only requires that the state treasurer provides services related to the promotion of the unclaimed property program in consultation with the Wisconsin Revenue Secretary. In doing so, the state treasurer will be working to vastly improve the promotion of the unclaimed property program. Treasurer Adamczyk will be working with the Wisconsin DMV to include inserts in yearly license renewals. In doing so, this will allow millions of Wisconsin residents to be reminded to check the unclaimed property program website.
All questions regarding the unclaimed property program must be directed to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR).
